Overview
The HID Signo 40 PIV Reader is a professional contactless PIV smart card reader designed for government, defence, critical infrastructure, data centres and other high-security environments that require standards-based identity verification. It is built for wall-switch mounting and supports a broad range of PKI-based FIPS 201 credentials, including PIV, PIV-I, CIV, CAC, TWIC and FRAC. When used with HID’s pivCLASS Authentication Module (PAM) or pivCLASS Embedded Authentication, the reader can process contactless PIV cards containing a Card Authentication Key certificate, enabling strong authentication aligned with federal access-control requirements. HID states that Signo PIV readers meet assurance-level requirements defined in NIST Special Publication 800-116, making the Signo 40 PIV suitable for organisations that need higher levels of credential trust and compliance. Beyond PIV credentials, the Signo 40 PIV Reader provides flexible support for both modern and legacy access technologies. Supported 13.56 MHz credentials include HID Seos, iCLASS SE, iCLASS, MIFARE DESFire EV1/EV2 and MIFARE Classic, while 125 kHz technologies include HID Prox, Indala Prox, Dorado Prox and EM Prox, helping organisations migrate gradually from older card systems to more secure smart credentials.
